Detailed Project Description:
Inspiration
Our inspiration for this topic came from an article I read a few weeks ago that went into detail on the bias of facial recognition models. It's disheartening to know that thousands of people may be wrongly imprisoned because of the industry we love!
What it does
Our solution allows the African American population to provide their facial recognition data to us, this allows us to better train these models to recognize features of all races.
How we built it
The iOS app connects to the backend server (NodeJS) to then relay a post/get method to the Mongo Atlas Database and then receive a response back that verifies the integrity and validity of the information submitted or needed. We also developed a static website using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. This was deployed on Railway using a GoDaddy domain!
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges, notably the fact that we lost two of our members. One of them had two seizures and had to sit out and the other fell ill. Never less, we persevered and completed our goal! We also ran into many code and database issues but overcame them by utilizing the resources provided by the hackathon such as the wonderful mentors and google of course!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to fully develop an iOS app as well as a website while understanding how the Ai model works!
What we learned
Every member of the team took the opportunity to learn a new skill from another teammate. We also researched and developed a basic understanding of how facial recognition Ai models are trained! Most importantly though, we educated ourselves on this important topic and found ways to spread awareness.

What's next for Unity Vision
Our next steps are to market our app, this will allow us to collect enough data to accurately retrain facial recognition models. We will also look into adding more metrics to ensure accuracy!
