iReferral is an algorithmic software solution developed by InVita Healthcare Technologies, it is designed to improve the organ donation referral process. It was developed in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, Lifebanc (the non-profit organ procurement organization for northeast Ohio), and Transplant Connect, a medical software company specializing in donation-transplant software.

iReferral integrates with electronic health records (EHRs) and iTransplant systems, automating the donor referral process by linking referring EHRs (such as Epic and Cerner) with iTransplant systems. This integration identifies potential donors who meet clinical criteria and transmits referrals electronically to organ procurement organizations (OPOs). The system reduces the burden on ICU nurses and M.E./Coroner staff, eliminates human error, and expedites the referral process.

iReferral was launched successfully throughout the Cleveland Clinic health system in northeast Ohio in February 2021, following a successful pilot at Cleveland Clinic main campus and Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital in 2020. The project was supported by a Cleveland Clinic Caregiver Catalyst Grant, which rewards innovation and initiative among Cleveland Clinic caregivers (Cleveland Clinic, 2021).

iReferral has been shown to increase referrals, donors, and successful transplants, improving communication between facilities and recovery organizations. It also supports regulatory compliance by providing unique referral ID numbers and ensuring timely referrals. iReferral is currently used by over 130 hospitals and more than 30 examiner and coroner offices, including Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (InVita Health, 2024; PRNewswire, 2023).
